Negging (a neg) is a backhanded compliment or light tease used as a pattern interrupt: a small nick at certainty so a woman bored of compliments actually pays attention. It comes from early-2000s club pickup — Mystery and Neil Strauss's The Game. Strauss's stated purpose was often to disqualify yourself as a suitor so the interaction is less loaded. Aimed at armor, with warmth, it is a flavor of teasing. Aimed at a wound (weight, job, age) it is just an insult. She laughs and fires back: you landed it. Smile drops: you went too far, regardless of intent. (Full article...)
