The hook point is the moment a set stops being polite and starts wanting you to stay: they lean in, they ask a question back, they laugh at something that was not a joke-shaped opener. Mystery-era students obsessed over it because most canned openers died before it.[1]
House reading: hook is just "this is now a conversation." Direct game tries to get there by stating interest instead of by a two-minute opinion opener.
