Ghosting is a term in dating and pickup. Ghosting is ending a relationship, or a conversation heading toward one, by going completely silent. No explanation, no goodbye, no closure. They just stop existing in your inbox. [1] Typical uses include:
- Three great dates, she's talking about meeting your friends, then nothing. Texts unread. Stories still posting.
- He matches with her on Hinge, they trade 40 messages over a week, he asks her out, and her account vanishes.
- Two months in. She stops replying on a Tuesday. You never hear from her again. The end.
What it means
Ghosting is when someone ends it by going dead silent. No breakup text, no "this isn't working," no reply at all. They just stop existing in your inbox, and whatever you two had quietly dies of neglect. One day there's a conversation, the next there's a void where a person used to be.
The term went mainstream around 2015, right when the apps made connections cheap and exits even cheaper. Before smartphones you actually had to say something out loud to make a person go away. Now you just don't unlock your phone. And it happens at every stage, after one match, after three months, after meeting the parents. There is no level of investment that buys you immunity, so don't take it as a referendum on your worth.
Silence is an answer. A rude one, sure. But it's an answer, so take it and go.
Why people do it
Strip away the moralizing and you've got four real reasons, and notice that thoughtful judgment of your long-term compatibility is not one of them:
- Avoidance. Confrontation is uncomfortable, saying nothing is easy. For people who are bad at hard conversations, ghosting is the path of least resistance.
- It costs them nothing. You're not in their friend group, you won't see them at work. The social penalty for ghosting a near-stranger rounds to zero.
- They haven't decided. Sometimes the ghost is provisional, she's keeping the option to come back without committing. That's Orbiting loading in the background.
- You did something disqualifying. Less common than your anxiety insists, but it happens. Too intense too fast, drunk and weird, said something off. She didn't feel like litigating it.
Ghosting is almost never a careful decision. It's a vibe-based opt-out. Don't dignify it with a deliberation it never had.
