Grounding is making the interaction real: present, local, about the two of you — not a performance, not a future montage. The term is used for it when the talk has floated into interview or fantasy and needs weight.[1]

Method

Do this when the talk has gone interview, abstract, or "someday":

  1. Name something in the room or on her that is true right now (the street, the drink, the hour).
  2. Ask one present-tense fact: where she is going, how she got here, what she can still do tonight. That is logistics, not a bio quiz.
  3. Put a beat of teasing on the answer, then lead — a corner, a coffee, a walk. Do not stay in Q&A.

Later pickup wants the interaction to feel like two people in a specific night, not a stacked routine you could run on anyone.

Failure mode

Interrogation. Five logistics questions with no tease and no move. Grounding is two or three real facts, then back to friction and leading.
