The three-second rule is Mystery-era advice: once you see a woman you might open, you have about three seconds before hesitation writes approach anxiety on your face.[1][2]
Chase Amante's Newbie assignment agrees on the substance (do not cook the approach until it is burnt) and does not care about the stopwatch. The rule is a nervous-system hack, not a law of physics.
Failure mode
Lunging at people who are in a closed conversation, working, or wearing headphones as if the timer overrode manners.
