An approach is walking up to a woman you do not already know and starting an interaction. If you want dates from strangers, you approach; waiting to be opened like a movie spy is a myth. The walk-up is the start of game, not the whole art. Mystery Method treated it as opening a set with an often-indirect opener. Later daygame made the same job a daylight street stop.
