Set interruption is opening a group that is already mid-conversation. Mystery taught a false time constraint ('I can only stay a second') as the social lubricant. Later writers still opens cold; the FTC is optional furniture, not the a common default.[1]
In practice
In practice: you are interrupting. Be brief, be direct once you can, and leave if they want the conversation back. That is calibration, not a right to the table.
