Social proof is looking more attractive because other people already approve of you: a crew that is laughing, a girl already with you, a room that wants your picture. The Wingman convention essay is a worked example: go with friends who are actually fun; people approach the group that is already having a night. A man alone, wandering, is the opposite signal.
