Orbiting is a term in dating and pickup. When someone stops talking to you directly but keeps watching and liking your posts, hanging around your digital life without ever showing up in it. [1] Typical uses include:
- She views your story within minutes but hasn't texted in weeks
- Likes a photo, never replies to a DM
- Drops a one-word comment on a meme, then vanishes on anything real
What it means
Orbiting is the half-ghost. She stopped talking to you in any real, accountable way (no texts, no calls, no plans) but she did not leave. She's still watching. Still tapping the screen. Still, in some low-grade way, around. The word showed up around 2018 because Instagram stories made it possible to be 100% absent from someone's life and 100% present in their feed at the same time.
Why people do it
Three flavors, usually. She wants you as an option without the obligation. She feels guilty about ghosting and the orbit is her residual conscience. Or she's just bored and watching your life like a show she used to like. Notice that none of these are "she wants to date you." If she did, she would text.
