Authenticity
Comedy and tragedy masks
Masks (Commons). Authenticity without a self is just another mask.
Field Inner game
Also known as authentic, real, be yourself
Origin later natural-game schools

Authenticity is congruence after you have something to be congruent *as*. "Just be yourself" is empty if the self is a hole: no body of work, no standards, no life that exists if she leaves. You must be something first — fundamentals, skill, a calendar, a point of view — then drop the pickup character.[1]

You must be something

Usual order:

  1. Build. Attractiveness fundamentals, outer game volume, a life that is not this interaction. That is identity as evidence, not as a forum title.
  2. Then match. Say what you mean. Do not run direct game as a line while you audition. That is congruence.
  3. Then the character can die. Authenticity is what is left when the canned stack is gone *and* you still have intent, skill, and a self.

You cannot skip to step 3. Authenticity-without-substance is tryhard in a sincere hat: you are performing "real" because you have nothing else.

Method

  • This week: one fundamental (posture, clothes, voice) and one outer loop (open, tease, lead or number-with-time). That is building.
  • In set: if you hear yourself reciting, stop. Switch to a fact in the room (grounding) and a want you actually have.
  • After: if the night only exists because of her, you do not have a self yet. Fix the calendar, not the speech.

Beginner drills (observation, talking to strangers) are the on-ramp. They do not wait for you to "feel authentic."

Other schools

Natural game / RSD. Claimed authenticity as the whole product. Sometimes useful. Often an excuse not to train.

Failure mode

Using authenticity to refuse technique ("that's not me"). Or using technique with no self ("I did the lines"). The usual claim is both: a man, then a method that fits him.
