An approach is walking up to a woman you do not already know and starting an interaction. In pickup, the claim is blunt: if you want dates from strangers, you approach. Waiting to be opened like a movie spy is a myth. Even Bond walks over.[1][2]
The approach is the start of game, not the whole art. Attractiveness fundamentals make it cheaper. They do not replace it.
History
Printed how-tos from Eric Weber (1970) already treated the street and the bar as places you walk up, not places you wait.[3] alt.seduction.fast field reports made volume a virtue: Strauss describes a student who ran 125 approaches in a day.[4]
Mystery Method treated the approach as opening a set — often a two-set or three-set in a club — with an opener, frequently indirect, often with a false time constraint so the group would not bolt.[2] Later daygame made the same job a daylight street stop: genuine interest, stated, then a conversation or a walk-on. 2010s writing kept the walk-up and dumped the stacked opener as the default.
Method
Beginner drills often grade it: observation and body first, then "hi," then a real direct open, then a number.
- Attractiveness fundamentals (posture, eye contact, walk, voice, clothes) make the walk-up cheaper. They do not replace it.
- Approach anxiety is normal. It is trained down by volume, not by more reading. Shrink the ask ("hi" only) until the nervous system will do it, then raise amplitude. See approach addiction.
- Default open, once you can say hello, is genuine interest stated (statement of intent / direct game). Mystery-style indirect game is a club tool for noisy groups.
- Do not spam-approach. A bad "you're pretty" with no conversation and an instant number-ask is sometimes called neo-direct. Direct is not a substitute for talking.
- Some women throw approach walls (the old word is bitch shield). That is often anti-stalker armor, not a verdict on you. Calibrate; do not plead.
- A freeze or a clear no ends the beat. Enthusiastic consent applies after you are in conversation; it also applies to not trapping someone who is trying to leave.
Other schools
Mystery-era. Open the set, not only the target. Give the friends a reason not to eject you. Isolate later. The diagnostics (IOI, IOD) tell you whether to stay.
London daygame. The stop is the approach. Twenty seconds of no hook and you walk. Street calibration is colder and faster than club calibration.
Natural / RSD. "Just go up congruent." Useful if you already have a self. Useless as an excuse to skip the first ten awkward reps.
Failure mode
Waiting for an approach invitation on a Tuesday sidewalk. Running a canned opener you cannot leave. Number-farming without a conversation. Treating a blowout as a referendum on your life rather than a data point. The inner arc of a man who actually approaches is: never walking up → doing it as a habit. Outer game follows a decision. The decision is proven only in action.
