# Slow approach — enter a legitimate shared space (line, table, meetup), settle, talk about the situation, ask about the costume without an interrogation, give an out, invite to the crew, then escalate only if she stays. Either path ends in Instagram or joining a crew, often both. IOIs listed in the essay (preening the wig, laugh, lean-in, eyes, asking to hang) are the usual list. The blog's extra warning: nerdy shyness can look like an IOD. Back off, give an out, see if she stays. Relieved when you leave = you were overbearing. Still there = continue.

* Not taking no. The floor is full of men who cannot. Distinguishing yourself from them is the game.

* Apps as the plan. Same supermajority-of-men problem as anywhere else.
* Operational alcohol-smuggling. Venue rules vary; "bring value" is the usable claim.
* Treating a partnered woman as default fair game. Ask once, clearly; if it is not an open arrangement, stop.
* Tinder-at-the-con as the plan. The essay itself says apps are a supermajority of men and a crutch.

Fun first is outcome independence, not passivity. You still walk up.
* No cosplay, no crew, no hotel, wandering the floor looking hungry.
* Making her the center of the weekend on contact (one-itis in a wig).
* Not taking no. Distinguishing yourself from the con's incompetent suitors is the game.
* Using the con as a substitute for ordinary skill. The first line of the essay is the house line.

Anime convention (pickup)
Field Venue
Also known as con game, party con

An anime convention is a dense, costumed, multi-day gathering. For pickup it is a venue, not a cheat code. This wiki's gold standard is still Girls Chase / Skilled Seducer: you still approach, calibration still beats a script, logistics still finish it, a no is still a no. [1] The useful shape of a large "party con" (several days, night events, adult rooms, a crowd) is carnival: strangers talk, costumes are the conversation, and the hotel is where the night can actually complete. If ordinary attractiveness fundamentals and the Newbie assignment are not in yet, the con will not install them.

What the venue gives you

 • Commentable appearance. Real peacocking: a costume people can name, that fits, that you put work into. Fashion fundamental with a plot. Premade Amazon kits and cereal-box jokes do not do this job.
 • Warm spaces. Lines, meetups, panels, tables. You can enter a shared situation instead of a sidewalk stop. That is still an approach. Complimenting the wig and walking is spam approaching.
 • Social proof. A crew that is actually having a night. Wandering the floor alone and hungry is the opposite signal.
 • Logistics on site. A room in or on the con. Distance kills the bounce. Locals still want the room because her logistics are at the con, not across town at your apartment.

How you open

Two amplitudes, both house-legal:

 1. Sit down in a legitimate shared space, settle, talk about the situation, ask about the costume without an interrogation, give an out, invite toward the crew. Escalate only if she stays. Festival / house-party game.
 2. See her, walk up within a few seconds, talk. Direct game with a costume hook. The compliment is the bare minimum; the conversation has to become specific.

Either path ends in a handle or joining a group, often both. IOIs are the usual ones (lean-in, eyes, laugh, asking to hang). Shyness at a nerd con can look like an IOD. Back off, give an out, see if she stays.

Failure modes

 • Using the con as a substitute for skill.
 • No costume, no crew, no room, no plan.
 • Making her the whole weekend on contact (one-itis in a wig).
 • Not taking no. The floor is full of men who cannot. Distinguishing yourself from them is the game.
 • Apps as the plan. Same supermajority-of-men problem as anywhere else.

Fun first is outcome independence, not passivity. You still walk up.
