A pickup artist (PUA) is a person who treats meeting and attracting sexual or romantic partners as a trainable skill. The label comes from the English-language seduction community of the late 1990s and 2000s, especially Mystery's club method and Neil Strauss's 2005 book The Game. [1][2][3][4] The word is used three ways, and this encyclopedia keeps them distinct:
- Self-description — a man (rarely a woman) who studies game, runs approaches, and talks in the field's jargon (IOI, DHV, set, opener).
- Industry — coaches, forums, bootcamps, and product funnels that grew around that practice.
- Insult — a journalist or civilian shorthand for manipulative dating. That usage is real; it is not the definition used on this wiki.
History
Usenet group alt.seduction.fast (ASF) collected early field reports and routines. Erik von Markovik (Mystery) turned club pickup into a stepwise model, the Mystery Method (attraction, comfort, seduction). Strauss embedded with that scene and published The Game, which made PUA a public noun.
After 2007 the scene split:
- Routine / indirect schools (Mystery, some Love Systems material).
- Natural / inner game (Juggler, some RSD offshoots, later YouTube).
- Daygame (London street pickup: Torero, Krauser, and the Eastern Europe circuit).
- Fundamentals / logistics (Chase Amante, Girls Chase, Skilled Seducer) — this wiki's house school.
- Online dating as its own skill (apps, photos, text).
Method
This wiki's default method is Girls Chase / Skilled Seducer (Seduction Wiki:Point of view). Other schools disagree on openers and on how much to script. They still agree on more than they admit:
- Attraction is partly passive (how you look, sound, and carry yourself) and partly active (what you do once you are in conversation).
- Approach anxiety is normal and is trained down by volume, not by insight alone.
- Calibration beats a memorized script once the student has any field time.
- Scarcity (one-itis) produces needy behavior that the same schools then have to "cure."
Jargon
A short core:
| Term | Gloss |
|---|---|
| Set | The person or group being approached |
| Opener | First line or action |
| IOI | Indicator of interest |
| IOD | Indicator of disinterest |
| DHV | Demonstration of higher value |
| Neg | Tease that nicks status rather than insults |
| Kino | Touch escalation |
| Frame | Whose interpretation of the interaction is running |
| AFC | Average frustrated chump — the untrained default |

Criticism
Standard objections: the scene objectifies women; routines are fake; "negging" is cruelty with a sales name; bootcamps sell hope. Practitioners' usual replies: every courtship culture has technique; faking is a beginner stage; a good neg is a tease aimed at armor not wounds; the product market is noisy because the skill is real. This wiki records both claims. It does not launder harassment as "game."
