The move after a miss is simple. You say something short and gracious, ''"All good, no worries"'' or just nothing at all, and you actually move on. No spiraling, no forensic analysis of where it went wrong, no 2am follow-up text. The guy who handles a miss cleanly is already ten times more attractive than the guy who can't. It demonstrates the one thing that actually matters: abundance. You're not devastated because this wasn't your only option. That energy is what makes the next shot land better. | The move after a miss is simple. Shooting Your Shot is a term in dating and pickup. Shooting your shot means making a direct, genuine move on someone you're attracted to, knowing full well you might miss, and doing it anyway. [1] Typical uses include:
- You DM the girl from the gym you've been exchanging glances with for three weeks. No preamble. Just: 'You've got good taste in headphones. Let me take you for coffee.' That's shooting your shot.
- She's been in your extended friend group for months. One night you pull her aside and say 'I think you're cool and I'd like to take you out sometime. What do you think?' That's shooting your shot.
- You match on Hinge, exchange two messages, and instead of letting it die you say 'Free Thursday evening? There's a bar I want to try.' Shooting your shot.
- She's out of your perceived league, so you say something anyway. She says no. You say 'Fair enough' and order another drink. That's shooting your shot and not being weird about the miss.
What it means
Shooting your shot is making a move on someone you're attracted to while knowing it might not work, and doing it anyway. It's the decision to put your interest on the table, clearly, instead of hovering in that limbo state where you sort of like her and she sort of knows it and nothing ever happens to either of you.
The term comes from basketball. You don't score by holding the ball. You shoot. Miss or make, at least the game is moving. The dating version is the same physics: you cannot get a yes from someone you never asked.
This sounds obvious. It is obvious. And yet an enormous percentage of men are out here orbiting girls they like, liking their posts, re-reading old texts, workshopping openers that never get sent. The shot stays in the hand. Nothing happens. They wonder why.
The guy who shoots and misses is ten times more attractive than the guy who never picked up the ball.
Why people don't do it
Fear, dressed up as strategy. Here's how the excuses actually sound in your head:
- "The timing isn't right." The timing is never right. There is no right time. There's now and there's never.
- "I don't want to make it weird." It's already weird. You've liked her for three months and acted like you're just friends. That's the weird part.
- "I need to build more rapport first." Rapport is fine. Six more months of being a warm, pleasant presence who never makes a move is not rapport, it's purgatory.
- "What if she says no?" Then you know, and you move. We'll get to this.
Every one of those is the brain running a stall tactic because rejection feels like a threat.
Why people who do it win
Women are attracted to decisiveness. Not arrogance, not aggression, just a guy who knows what he wants and says so. It's genuinely rare. Most men are so terrified of a no that they communicate in vague, deniable half-moves that give the girl no clear signal to respond to. Then they're confused when nothing happens.
When you shoot your shot, you do three things at once. You show confidence, because timid guys don't make direct moves. You show you value your own time, because you're not going to orbit forever hoping she figures it out. And you show you respect hers, because you're giving her an actual, honest question to answer instead of making her wade through subtext.
That combination is rare enough that it stands out. Even a no often comes with a compliment, because the directness itself is attractive. You lose nothing by being clear. You lose everything by being vague.
The part about missing
You will miss some shots. This is the whole game. No one has a hundred percent conversion rate, and anyone who tells you they do is either lying or only shooting when they're already certain, which is not shooting your shot, it's just closing a deal.
A miss is not a wound. It's information. She's not available, not interested, or not right for you. That's useful. You didn't waste another month hovering in ambiguity. You got your answer in a week and now you can spend your energy somewhere it has a chance of working.
The move after a miss is simple. You say something short and gracious, "All good, no worries" or just nothing at all, and you actually move on.
