The other person needs autonomy and gets suffocated when someone wants too much. Put them in a relationship and they run a perfect engine of mutual torture: the more the anxious person chases, the faster the avoidant bolts. The more the avoidant disappears, the harder the anxious person chases. Nothing resolves. The tension just orbits.

This is attachment theory, and it's not new. John Bowlby mapped the attachment system in the 1950s.
